How to find your room directions
Before you begin, take 2 minutes to understand how compass directions work in your home. This ensures an accurate Harmony analysis.
Stand at the center of your home
Find the approximate middle point of your home. This is your reference point for all directions.
Open your phone's compass app
Every smartphone has a built-in compass. Open it and note where North is. The red needle always points North.
Identify each room's zone
From the center, each room falls in the compass direction it sits in. A room to your right when facing North is in the East zone.
North-facing home
Entrance opens toward North
Standing at center facing North toward the entrance: rooms to your right are in the East zones, rooms to your left are in the West zones.
East-facing home
Entrance opens toward East — but compass directions are unchanged
Same 8 zones, same orientation to North. Only the entrance moved.
Why this matters
Compass directions are fixed to the Earth's magnetic field, not to your entrance. North is always North, regardless of which way your home faces. This is why traditions like Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui place such importance on actual compass readings.
A few tips
- No compass app? Look up your home on Google Maps. North is always up on the map. Match each room's position to the compass directions.
- Most accurate reading: stand at the center of your home and slowly turn 360 degrees with the compass app open. Note which direction each room is in.
- Multiple floors? Directions are the same on every floor — you only need to determine them once.
